Accessibility

What I aim for, what I have checked, and what I have not.

I want this site to work for everybody who comes to it. The standard I build to is WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which in practice means it should be usable with a keyboard alone, with a screen reader, at 200% zoom, and with animation switched off.

What I have checked

Every page is tested on each change, at a phone width and a desktop width, and anything that breaks accessibility does not go live. Contrast is measured rather than eyeballed. One grey in the palette was thrown out during the build because it came in at 3.34:1 where 4.5:1 is required, which is not a difference you can see by looking at it.

Focus is visible on everything you can reach with a keyboard, so you can always see where you are. If you have reduced motion switched on, the moving parts of the homepage hold still, and nothing on this site needs movement to make sense.

What I have not checked

Testing catches a missing label. It cannot tell me that a label is confusing, that things are read out in an order nobody would choose, or that a page technically passes and is still tiring to use. Those are judgements, and they need a person making them.

I have not yet sat down and worked through the whole site with VoiceOver and NVDA. Until I have, I would rather tell you that than let you assume it has been done.

Known limitations

The homepage opens with a drifting field of stones. It is decoration and nothing else: it carries no information, screen readers do not see it, and it does not run at all if you have reduced motion set or your device cannot manage it. A still photograph takes its place. Nothing on the page depends on having watched it.

If something does not work

Please tell me and I will fix it. Something you cannot use is a fault, the same as a broken link or a wrong price, and it gets treated like one. Write to bonjour@maisonmedina.ca and tell me what you were trying to do and what happened instead. If you want to say what you were using, that helps me find it faster. If you would rather not, do not worry about it.

And anything this site can do, that address can do too, including starting a commission. You should never have to fight a web page to talk to me.
